About Songyang Old Street
Its Ming-Qing layout places shops along the street and residences behind, within timber-and-earth buildings. Traditional trades give these spaces their meaning: Xinhua's 2024 report follows a blacksmith making household tools and a couple weaving palm-fibre beds, crafts tied to the needs of surrounding rural communities.
A conservation programme begun in 2012 renewed stone paving, buried utility lines and improved drainage and fire protection while residents remained in place. Later projects introduced art and craft venues. The result brings the street's old building pattern into contact with both continuing livelihoods and newer cultural uses.
