About Xiazhu Lake
The local ibis programme began in April 2008, when ten birds were transferred from Zhouzhi in Shaanxi. Captive breeding was followed by acclimatization and a first release of 33 birds in 2014. Breeding enclosures and free-living ibises now represent different parts of the same conservation effort; the presence of one does not mean every bird seen here is wild. Reconnected waterways, restored aquatic vegetation and reduced disturbance have helped improve their habitat.
The visitor experience centres on reed-lined channels, the ibis observation area on Zhuhuan Island and the wetland science hall. These places explain both the wetland landscape and the work behind its recovery. Use the designated visitor routes and viewing areas; research enclosures and other conservation spaces are separate from the ordinary visit, and sightings of free-living birds vary.
