About Zhedong Grand Canyon
Zhedong Grand Canyon (浙东大峡谷), the "great gorge of eastern Zhejiang", is a gorge and lake landscape in the southern Tiantai Mountains (天台山) in Ninghai County (宁海县), Ningbo, based at Baixi Village (白溪村) in Chalu Town (岔路镇).
The scenic area covers about 160 square kilometres, with a core of more than 30 that falls into two parts. Dasongxi Gorge (大松溪峡谷) runs for more than 20 kilometres; the Ningbo Disabled Persons' Federation's travel guide counts six winding streams, 18 peaks, 28 ravines and 72 waterfalls along the gorge, lists it among the first national water-conservancy scenic areas and notes that it is known as the "first great gorge of eastern Zhejiang". The other part is Feilong Lake (飞龙湖), whose sights include the Tianhe Dam (天河大坝) and the Feilong Bridge.
Much of the gorge's lore is Taoist. Local tradition holds that Laozi passed the Lingbao scriptures to Ge Xuan (葛玄) at Tianmu Peak (天姥峰), and that the Jin-dynasty Taoist Ge Hong (葛洪) lived as a hermit on the hill now called Songxi Dongtian (松溪洞天). Ninghai News also links the high cliffs and drifting cloud here to Li Bai's poem "Dreaming of Mount Tianmu" (梦游天姥吟留别). By 2016 only about 3.5 kilometres of the Dasongxi Gorge had been developed for visitors, divided into a gorge sightseeing zone, the Tianmu Peak area and a gorge adventure zone, with named scenes such as Langfeng Chendu (阆风晨渡), Wanshi Buzhen (万石布阵, "ten thousand stones in battle array") and Danya Cuigu (丹崖翠谷, "red cliffs, green valley").
