Chinese Wikipedia's article on the city names them, together with dried aubergine (茄子干), which the Jingdezhen dialect calls 'luosuogan' (洛缩干), as hand-made snacks that local people like, in addition to the city's best-known snacks: jiaoziba (饺子粑), jianshuiba (碱水粑) and the thick dressed rice noodles called lengfen (冷粉).
Ingredients
A feature on Jiangxi chilli food in Traveler magazine (旅行家杂志) describes Chilli Rice Cakes as chilli and glutinous rice combined with pumpkin or aubergine and dried. The pumpkin version comes out red and the aubergine version black.
Flavour and texture
The same feature says the cakes are usually cut into long strips or round cakes, and that buyers can choose the heat: sweet-spicy, medium or very hot.
How it is eaten
Chilli Rice Cakes are eaten as a snack. Traveler magazine places them in its Jiangxi chilli round-up beside the chilli cakes of Guangchang (广昌) in Fuzhou (抚州) and the chilli sauce of Nankang (南康) in Ganzhou (赣州), and suggests trying them on a visit to Jingdezhen.
