Liyang Tribute Noodles (黎阳贡面) are hand-made hollow dried noodles from Xiying village (席营村) in Tunzi town (屯子镇), Xun County (浚县), Hebi (鹤壁), Henan. Liyang (黎阳) is the old name of Xun County, and 'tribute' refers to a story that the noodles were once sent to the Ming emperor.

How it is made

China.com.cn's Henan channel (中国网) lists just three ingredients: good-quality groundwater, finely milled wheat flour and refined salt. The noodles are made entirely by hand through 28 steps and come out white, as thin as thread and hollow in the centre. The same report adds that the hollow core cannot be achieved if preservatives or whitening agents are added.

Flavour and texture

The noodles stand up to long cooking without going soggy and do not fall apart when reheated. Boiled and lifted into a bowl, they are smooth and markedly chewy.

Where it comes from

China.com.cn dates the noodles to the Ming dynasty, says they are made mainly in household workshops, and says they took the name 'tribute noodles' after Wang Yue (王越), the Ming Minister of Rites, presented them to the emperor and they were counted among palace foods. Xun County lies in northern Henan on the north bank of the old course of the Yellow River; Liyang County was set up there under the Western Han, and the Song renamed it Xunzhou (浚州). In January 2026 Xiying's hand-made noodles were among the village products shown at the Tunzi town round of Xun County's village folk-performance contest, Hebi News (鹤壁新闻网) reports.
