About Beijing

The municipality also reaches into the mountains, so a central-city visit and a Great Wall excursion involve different journeys. For a first visit, the palace, a hilltop view and a lakeside neighborhood reveal three distinct layers of the city: court ceremony, urban planning and everyday courtyard life. Modern Olympic architecture and the major national museums offer a separate focus rather than an extension of every palace outing.

What to look for

  • The Forbidden City's sequence of gates, ceremonial courts and imperial residences.
  • Jingshan's hilltop perspective on the palace roofs and the historic axis.
  • Shichahai's linked lakes and surrounding hutong streets.

Location & getting there

Getting to Beijing

Choose the railway station or airport shown on your booking: Beijing Capital (PEK), northeast of the city, and Beijing Daxing (PKX), to the south, are different airports.

  • This central-city map point is an orientation marker. Set your onward destination to the entrance of the actual attraction, such as the Palace Museum's Meridian Gate.
General visit reminders

Use the Chinese name and exact local address when arranging your arrival. A city, district or neighbourhood can cover a wide area, so choose the particular streets or venues you want to visit and group nearby stops together. Check onward and return connections before committing to a distant extension.

Combine your visit

Suggested order within this visit:

  1. Forbidden City故宫

Begin with the imperial courts after arranging the required admission.

  2. Jingshan Park景山公园

Continue north of the palace for the axial view.

  3. Shichahai什刹海

Finish farther north in the lakeside hutong neighborhood.

These are distinct central-city stops with separate access arrangements; allow for transfers and the palace's opening schedule.
