Xue Family Steamed Grain Cones (薛家窝头) are a speciality of Litan (里坦) in Dacheng County (大城县). Their main ingredients are broomcorn millet and yellow soybeans. The buns have a pointed top and rounded base, giving them a pagoda-like profile associated with the name Golden Pagoda (黄金塔).

How they are made

The grain and soybean ingredients are made into dough, shaped by hand and steamed. People’s Daily Online describes these as carefully controlled stages of the Xue family preparation.

Flavour and local roots

The Dacheng government describes a fragrant aroma, gentle sweetness and fine texture. Its account traces the Xue family’s production in Litan to the Daoguang period (道光年间) of the Qing dynasty (清代). The buns are also called palace wotou (宫廷窝头), a name recorded by People’s Daily Online.
