Puli Savory Fried Dough Sticks 埔里咸油条
Puli Savory Fried Dough Sticks is featured among the local specialties of Taiwan.

Puli Savory Fried Dough Sticks (埔里咸油条) are a breakfast speciality of Puli (埔里), a town in Nantou County (南投縣), Taiwan. The Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration (日月潭國家風景區管理處) of Taiwan's Tourism Administration describes them as a Puli breakfast of fried dough sticks with a pan-fried egg tucked inside and a sprinkling of pepper salt.
How it is made
CTS News (華視新聞) shows the dough sticks fried until they are very thick and puffed up, then cut open down the middle and stuffed with a fried egg, a hot dog or water bamboo shoots (筊白筍). Liu Qingbao (劉清寶), who runs the Puli Qingbao Savory Fried Dough Sticks (埔里清寶鹹油條) shop, told CTS that at first the sticks were sold plain, and that egg was the first filling added.
Flavour and texture
CTS describes the filled sticks as layered in texture and salty-savoury in flavour. The Tourism Administration calls the egg-and-pepper-salt version full-flavoured.
Where it comes from
In January 2025 the Nantou County Government published the results of its 'Nantou 100 Bowls' (南投100碗) food assessment, in which ten judges, including food experts and internet personalities, selected 78 local eateries. The Puli Qingbao shop topped the list with the highest rating of five bowls. ETtoday reported that the shop had been running for 30 years and was passing to Liu's daughter, Liu Zijing (劉子靜), who was developing new fillings such as spring-onion egg, meat cutlet, hot dog and Puli's own water bamboo shoots.
