Brown Sugar Cake 黑糖糕
Brown Sugar Cake is featured among the local specialties of Taiwan.

Brown Sugar Cake (黑糖糕) is a Penghu (澎湖) sweet associated with the islands’ rice-based fa gao (發糕) cakes and their use as ritual offerings.
Where it comes from
The Penghu tourism authority recounts a tradition that pastry makers from Okinawa (沖繩), who settled on the islands during Japanese rule, adapted the existing rice cakes to a brown-sugar flavour and taught local bakers. Early cakes were made to order and sold by weight for temples, ancestor worship, weddings and funerals.
Flavour and texture
Its later growth as a travel gift brought changes in the cake itself. The authority describes soft, non-sticky and low-sugar versions, while local bakeries developed their own brands and gift packaging.
