About Cao Yu Former Residence

Brick-and-timber houses contain restored living and study spaces, while photographs, manuscripts, books and personal belongings connect the rooms with his writing life. This is a small literary house museum within the former Italian concession, so the domestic scale is part of its appeal. Look at the rooms and working objects before returning to the surrounding streets that formed his early urban environment.

The residence became a memorial hall in 2010. Cao Yu (曹禺), a playwright and theatre educator, was born in Tianjin on 24 September 1910. His father, Wan Dezun (万德尊), had worked as a secretary to Li Yuanhong (黎元洪). The building is listed as a Tianjin municipal cultural relic protection unit (天津市文物保护单位) and as a historical building with key protection.

Built in the late Qing dynasty, the residence has a stated total floor area of 912 square meters. Its two courtyard properties contain brick-and-timber buildings with different orientations: the small building in the No. 23 courtyard faces north, while the two-story building in the No. 25 courtyard faces west. The latter courtyard also contains five single-story rooms.
