About Five Pagoda Temple
Rows of individually varied Buddha images cover the masonry, making close observation as rewarding as the overall silhouette. Behind the main structure, carved panels depict Buddhist cosmology and a rare Mongolian star map. The combination of architecture, devotional sculpture and astronomical imagery gives this compact Hohhot monument a distinctive subject, even for visitors who have already seen several of the city's larger temples.
The temple lies in the older part of Hohhot, near Qingcheng Park. Its alternative name is the Precious Pagoda of the Buddhist Relics of the Diamond Throne, while its Mongolian name is Tabun suburγan-u süm-e. A Mongolian cosmological map associated with the temple depicts the zodiac and positions of numerous stars.
