About Harbin Grand Theatre
MAD's design uses the surrounding landscape as part of the experience: the public forecourt reveals the building's curves, while glass overhead brings daylight into the interior. Ash timber gives the large auditorium a warmer, more enclosed character. Architecture is therefore a reason to visit alongside performances, but access to auditoriums, interior tours and elevated exterior routes depends on the theatre's arrangements.
The theatre measures 850,349 square feet; its design was led by architect Ma Yansong. It stands in Harbin, a UNESCO-listed 'City of Music' that hosts the annual Harbin Summer Music Concert and is where China's first orchestra was established, and forms the centerpiece of Cultural Island, an arts hub set among wetlands beside the Songhua River in suburban Harbin.
A smaller auditorium seats 414 people behind a soundproof glass backwall that turns the surrounding scenery into a backdrop for performances. Carved paths across the building's facade let performance-goers and the public alike climb toward the top for views, and the grand lobby serves as a resting area for visitors.
Ma wanted the building's snow-white form to have a soothing effect, in contrast to the towering, imposing landmarks common in Chinese cities, and emphasized integrating the structure with the surrounding wetlands, waterways and snowy terrain rather than standing apart from them.
