About Fuyou Road Mosque

The building combines a traditional Qing-style exterior and interior arrangement with Islamic religious functions.

A rectangular courtyard leads into the complex, with the prayer hall to its south and washing facilities to the north. Wangyue Pavilion occupies the rooftop. These spaces explain how the mosque fits religious practice into a dense old-city setting. Observe public areas respectfully and ask before entering prayer spaces.

Before the mosque was built, Muslims from Nanjing had rented two rooms for prayer. In 1870, thirty-one Muslims raised funds to buy 400 square meters of land and built the mosque during the ninth year of the Tongzhi era (同治九年) of the Qing dynasty. It was subsequently rebuilt or expanded several times, in 1897, 1905, 1936 and 1979.

The mosque covers a total of 1,520 square meters within a three-story traditional Qing-style building, which also houses an audience hall, a dean's room, a library, conference halls and bathrooms. Its roof beams carry various painted patterns and pierced floor carvings as decoration.

The mosque was once a center of political, religious and cultural life for Shanghai's Muslims, and it was the birthplace of Wuben Primary School (务本小学), the first Islamic school in the city's modern history. It now serves as a service center for prayer and other Muslim activities in Shanghai, and it houses the Shanghai Islamic Board of Directors (上海伊斯兰董事会), founded in 1909.
