About Jinji Lake

The Gate of the Orient forms a conspicuous western-shore landmark, with its two towers joined into an arch.

Ligongdi on the southern side preserves the line of a historic causeway within a redeveloped leisure district. These two settings offer a clear comparison between contemporary skyline architecture and a lower waterside street. The lake is extensive, so select particular shore areas and arrange connections rather than assuming a short complete circuit.

Jinji Lake was originally a shallow, marshy pond. It was redeveloped from 2003 under a landscape plan by AECOM into one of China's largest lakefront parks, and today it is also one of the largest inland lakes in China, connected to the surrounding water system by channels.

Landmark buildings around the lake include the crescent-shaped Suzhou Culture and Arts Center on the eastern shore, whose exterior recalls Beijing's National Stadium and which houses a 1,200-seat theatre, an IMAX cinema complex and a science museum, along with the Suzhou International Expo Center and a Ferris wheel park. Besides the Gate of the Orient, two other super-tall towers stand or are being built by the lake, the Suzhou IFS and the Suzhou Zhongnan Center.

A musical fountain and water-screen show on the lake, themed 'Shui Yun Fei Ge,' spans 130 meters east to west and 208 meters north to south, with its main jet reaching 108 meters; it combines water-screen film, laser display and music with lighting, and is described as the largest integrated water-landscape project in East China.

A provincial city base for classical gardens, canals and soup-noodle breakfasts; do not confuse its old city with the distant North railway station.
