About Yunlong Lake
Its East Lake, West Lake and Small South Lake create distinct water landscapes rather than a single compact pond. Hudong Road follows the mountain-facing side, while the lakeside park and Su Gong Tower provide other viewing points. The apricot planting adds a seasonal feature along the eastern shore. Choose a shore section and a second viewpoint according to transport, leaving the whole-lake circuit for a separate plan.
Yunlong Lake was historically known as Stone Dog Lake (石狗湖) and was originally low-lying ground; it was later expanded into a reservoir to address flooding and renamed for its position at the foot of Yunlong Mountain. Fish farming and lotus cultivation once occupied part of the southern shore before that area was gradually redeveloped as parkland.
The lake is designated a Jiangsu provincial scenic area (江苏省级风景名胜区) and holds numerous cultural relics, including Han-dynasty pictorial stone carvings (汉画像石) recovered through archaeological work. In August 2016 the scenic area was rated a national AAAAA tourist attraction. Its surroundings include ancient-style bridges and buildings, along with peach, willow, plum and red maple trees, and lotus plants growing in the lake.
What to look for
- The eastern shore combines open water with Yunlong Mountain behind it.
- Small South Lake and Su Gong Tower provide a different, more enclosed lakeside composition.
The surrounding area
A northern extension focused on Han culture, with its own travel days rather than a short detour from Suzhou.
