About Hengdian World Studios
The Qin Palace set creates an imperial setting used in productions such as Hero, while Guangzhou Street recalls the first backlot built for The Opium War. These are constructed screen environments, and their value lies in how architecture creates an imagined period world. Select two sets and allow for transfers between them. Filming, performances and public access can affect the day’s route, so do not assume every production space is open.
Hong Kong Street (香港街) was completed in September 1998, alongside a large indoor studio. Its architecture reproduces styles associated with Hong Kong in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Jiangnan Water Town set (江南水乡) followed in 1999, using the layout of Republican-period Hengdian as its model.
The Ming and Qing palace complex (明清王宫) reproduces major buildings from Beijing's Forbidden City (北京故宫), with additional palace and old-city settings. Other areas preserve historic fabric through relocation: nearby Ming and Qing buildings were moved intact to create an old-street set. Hengdian became a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区) in April 2010.
