About Heze Museum
Shang-period ritual bronzes provide one focus, while Yuan blue-and-white porcelain recovered with an ancient ship introduces a very different chapter of exchange and craftsmanship. The historical exhibition groups material around origins, mound settlements, Han culture and ship finds. Look at the objects and their excavation contexts together; individual galleries and the display of the ship itself can change.
The museum was established in 1984 as successor to the Heze region's Mao Zedong Thought Exhibition Hall (菏泽地区毛泽东思想展览馆), founded in 1967 and renamed several times before becoming a museum in 1985. Its present building at 537 Huaying Road opened in 1996. The museum took its name in 2000 and was rated a state third-grade museum in 2013. In 2021 the Lu Southwest Folklore Museum (鲁西南民俗博物馆) was merged into it. A new museum building, planned from 2012 and begun in December 2019 in Dingtao District, was designed by a team led by academician He Jingtang (何镜堂).
The museum comprises the Huaying Road branch and the Tianxiang Road branch, the latter housing the folklore museum, plus a VR digital gallery that presents the collection through new media. The Huaying Road branch covers 13,000 square metres, with a steel-and-concrete exhibition building of more than 3,000 square metres to the north and offices to the west.
The collections total 18,374 items, including 338 rated as precious, among them 7 first-grade, 52 second-grade and 279 third-grade pieces. The Huaying Road branch has five galleries; the permanent Museum Highlights display presents over 100 selected items across 296 square metres, arranged by pottery, porcelain, bronze, jade and other categories, while two further galleries show more than 120 artifacts recovered from a Yuan-dynasty shipwreck and the wooden hull.
