About Meilang Twin Pagodas
The two towers share a stone construction imitating timber architecture, yet their plans differ: one is hexagonal and the other square. Their projecting eaves and carved surfaces reward comparison at close range.
The smaller tower carries Buddhist figures and decorative reliefs, including supporting figures at the corners. Look at the changes in plan and detail before visiting the small site museum if it is open. The former nunnery associated with the towers no longer survives, so the paired structures themselves are the main architectural evidence.
What to look for
- The hexagonal and square towers show two different plans within the same paired composition.
- Stone eaves, niches and relief carvings imitate and elaborate timber-building forms.
- Raised platforms and surrounding water shape the view of both pagodas.
