About Liziba Station
The station and building were designed together, with noise-isolation measures separating railway operations from the homes above and around it. The unusual arrangement can be understood from two perspectives: the train entering the building and the passenger route through the station itself. Treat the working platforms as transport space and use public areas for photographs.
Planning began in 1998, when Line 2 was routed through Liziba just as construction of a 19-story residential building was already planned for the same site; rather than choosing between them, the rail company and the building's developer decided to build the station and the building together. A design team led by Ye Tianyi (叶天义), a Chongqing University civil engineering lecturer, took on the commission from the developer in May 1998, revising the design at least six times over two years before it was finalized.
The elevated station occupies the sixth to eighth floors of the 19-story building, with shops on the floors below and residences above, and has two entrances. Although the monorail and the building appear fused, the two structures do not interfere with each other: the building's interior walls are set back 20 centimeters from the rail piers, a design without precedent elsewhere in mainland China. In 2018, rising visitor numbers led to construction of an observation platform on the adjoining Liziba Zhengjie street, about 1,500 square meters in total, including an 840-square-meter area set aside for photography.
What to look for
- Trains enter and leave openings within the residential building.
- The elevated station occupies the building’s middle floors, showing the railway and housing as one designed structure.
Background & history
Liziba is a monorail station on Line 2 of Chongqing Rail Transit in the direct-administered municipality of Chongqing, China. It is located in Yuzhong District and opened in 2005. The station is unique in that it is located on the sixth to eighth floors of a 19-story residential building, with the monorail trains going through the middle of the building. It uses specialized noise reduction equipment to isolate station noise from the surrounding residence. Contrary to some misreporting, the station and building were actually constructed together as one whole structure, and the monorail was not retrofitted through the middle of an existing structure.
