About Qionghai Lake

On the northwestern shore, Guanniao Island and Mengli Shuixiang bring the water close to public paths and resting places. Farther along, Yuesefengqing Town adds a built waterfront below Lushan. Choose one shore section for an unhurried visit; a complete circuit is a larger outing, and individual wetland entrances can have different access arrangements.

Qionghai lies at the northeastern foot of Lu Shan (泸山) in Xichang, about 7 km from the city center. The lake lies in a depression on the east side of the Anning River (安宁河) valley, in a mountainous region between the Hengduan Mountains and the Yungui Plateau. It is the second-largest freshwater lake in Sichuan, forms the core of the Qionghai-Lushan National Key Scenic Area (邛海泸山国家级风景名胜区), and supplies Xichang's drinking water.

Since the 1960s, filling parts of the lake for farmland and fish ponds damaged nearly two-thirds of its shoals and reed marshes, reducing the lake's area from 34 to 26.7 square kilometers and severely damaging its wetland ecology. Wetland restoration since carried out by Xichang has increased the wetland area, but in 2022 the lake still had a spring bloom of shusi algae (束丝藻) and an autumn bloom of yuxing algae (鱼腥藻).

The lake's basin belongs to the Yalong River (雅砻江) system of the Yangtze basin. Its main inflows, the Guanba (官坝河), Gaocang (高仓河) and Ezhang (鹅掌河) rivers, drain via the Haimen River (海门河) into the Anning River, a tributary of the Lancang River (澜沧江). The basin covers 307.67 square kilometers and the lake 27.41 square kilometers, with an average depth of about 11 m, a maximum of 18.3 m, and a storage capacity of 293 million cubic meters.

What to look for

  • Guanniao Island and Mengli Shuixiang combine wetland water, vegetation and public viewing spaces.
  • The Yuesefengqing waterfront has open lake views with Lushan rising behind the western shore.

Location & getting there

Getting to Qionghai Lake

Use the Guanniao Island wetland entrance for the northwest shore nearest central Xichang. For Yuesefengqing Town, arrange a separate drop-off on Haibin Middle Road. Choose the section before booking a transfer rather than navigating to the centre of the lake.

General visit reminders

Allow room for the terrain and weather when choosing your route. Check the operator’s current trail, shuttle and cableway notices where applicable, and confirm the return connection before setting out. A broad landscape pin does not identify every trailhead or access point.
