About Jyekundo Monastery
It belongs to the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. Assembly halls and monastic residences occupy the hillside, giving the complex a different character from a level courtyard temple. The Ninth Panchen Lama died here in 1937. The temple is a working religious place, so follow the areas opened to visitors.
The monastery's Tibetan name is rendered as Jiegu Dunzhuleng (结古顿珠楞). Among its principal buildings are Sangzhou Jiacuo Assembly Hall (桑舟嘉措经堂) and Maitreya Hall (弥勒殿), arranged within the hillside complex.
What to look for
- Assembly halls form the religious centre of the hillside complex.
- Monastic residences show how the buildings follow Jiegu Hill.
