About Dalongdong Baoan Temple
Its most rewarding details are close to hand: carved dragon columns, stone lions, painted walls and roof decorations assembled from ceramic pieces. Craftsmen worked on opposite sides of the building, making comparison between left and right a useful way to look.
The main-hall corridor includes murals by Pan Lishui. Allow time for these and the woodcarving, while leaving worshippers space around the altars. Hami Street outside belongs to the older Dalongdong commercial neighbourhood; the historic Forty-four Shops provide context for the community around the temple.
What to look for
- Compare the paired carvings and roof decoration made by different craftsmen.
- Look for Pan Lishui’s murals around the main-hall corridor.
- Hami Street connects the temple with the historic Forty-four Shops neighbourhood.
The surrounding area
