About Section of Macao's Old City Walls
The surviving section of Macao's old city walls is a fragment of the defensive system that once enclosed much of the settlement.
Macao's tourism account traces Portuguese wall-building to the sixteenth century and describes fortifications along the northern, eastern and southern sides of the town. The remaining section is valuable as evidence of that earlier urban boundary. It is a short heritage stop rather than a complete walkable city-wall circuit.
The surviving fragment is most informative when imagined as part of an earlier boundary around the settlement. Notice its construction and position relative to the nearby streets, then compare that small remnant with the much larger modern city. Its value lies in evidence of a vanished defensive system, rather than the length of a wall walk available today.
What to look for
- The surviving wall fabric.
- Its relationship to the historic street pattern.
