About Sanjiangkou River Confluence
Sanjiangkou in Tongjiang is the meeting place of the Songhua and Heilongjiang rivers. The broad water surface, distant banks and riverside viewing spaces define the experience. Despite the name’s reference to three river reaches, this is the confluence of two named rivers; the Wusuli River is not the river joining here.
Tongjiang stands on the southern side of the confluence, in a border landscape facing Russia across the Heilongjiang. Regional interpretation also connects the area with Hezhe community culture. Differences in the colour or movement of the two incoming waters may be visible under suitable conditions, but a sharply divided line is not a permanent feature.
Use a riverside map to identify the two upstream directions and the combined downstream flow. Then compare the width of the channels with the low surrounding land and any visible wetland margins. This is a place to understand river geography at a large scale; the current, seasonal water level and visibility determine the details seen on a particular day.
What to look for
- Identify the Songhua and Heilongjiang river directions.
