Gaizhou Small Skewers (盖州小串), also called Gaixian xiaochuan (盖县小串), are a local barbecue food of Gaizhou (盖州). A mutton version features in Yingkou Daily writer Yu Xin’s (于鑫) memories of buying small skewers from a local cook known as Xiao Wu (小武).
How it is made
Yu remembers Xiao Wu standing at a long iron barbecue, turning a handful of skewers over charcoal and scattering chilli powder and ground cumin over them. The meat was threaded on iron skewers. In the writer’s later visit to Xiao Wu’s Naxienian Barbecue (那些年烧烤), small skewers again arrived by the handful.
How it is eaten
Gaizhou’s culture and tourism bureau presents the skewers as a late-night food, paired with chilled beer or old-style soft drinks. Their place in local food culture also extends to souvenirs: the bureau’s 2025 promotion introduced skewer-shaped toys made by Gaizhou Liwu (盖州礼悟).
