About Xiangshan Film City
Xiangshan Film City (象山影视城) is a film and television studio complex that doubles as a theme park, in Xinqiao Town (新桥镇), Xiangshan County (象山县), Ningbo, within the Datanggang eco-tourism area (大塘港生态旅游区).
It grew out of a single television series. In May 2003 the director Zhang Jizhong (张纪中), scouting locations for The Return of the Condor Heroes (神雕侠侣), came to Xiangshan and settled on a plot in Xinqiao with Lingyan Mountain (灵岩山) behind it. The exterior sets, among them the city of Xiangyang, the Tomb of the Living Dead and Guiyun Manor, went up in six months in Song-dynasty style. The studio opened on 10 January 2005, and the series was first broadcast in 2006.
Later zones were added for other productions. Chen Kaige (陈凯歌) led the building of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States City, Zhang Jizhong a Journey to the West park, and private investors funded a Republican-era City. The square Tang City in the south-east corner, about 71 mu (roughly 4.7 hectares), was designed and built over almost a year by the crew of The Longest Day in Chang'an (长安十二时辰), working from old maps and historical records of Chang'an; filming ran from November 2017 to June 2018. Other titles shot here include Sacrifice (赵氏孤儿), Nirvana in Fire (琅琊榜), The Legend of Mi Yue (芈月传) and Eternal Love (三生三世十里桃花). The site was rated a national 4A tourist attraction in 2012.
Visitors walk through the standing sets. Reporting on a 2014 press visit, the People's Daily describes the jade bed of the heroine Xiaolongnü (小龙女) in the Tomb of the Living Dead, the Monkey King's Water Curtain Cave and the old road from Sacrifice, with performers in period costume working the streets. It also describes a post-production dubbing experience, in which visitors add wind, hoofbeats and dialogue to clips from Sacrifice, and a wire-flying and martial-arts stage.
