About Shangzhuang Village
Houses line the Chang Stream from Yanglin Bridge and rise gradually behind the waterfront; stone-paved lanes run between them. Hu Shi’s childhood house, built in 1897, has two halls linked by upper-floor passages. Its entrance carries brick-carved narrative scenes, while orchid designs decorate timber screens and window panels. These carvings are attributed to Hu Guobin, a craftsman of the Hu Kaiwen ink-mould tradition, bringing the village’s celebrated craft into its domestic architecture.
