About Jining Grand Canal Old Town
Jining owed its importance to the canal. Under the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties the highest administrative and military offices supervising canal grain transport were seated here, which earned the city the nickname of the 'seventy-two yamen'; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's account counts 619 years of top-level canal administration at Jining, or 491 counting only from the Ming establishment of the River Governor's yamen. Around 6.4 kilometres of the old canal runs through the central city, and eleven protected heritage sites at provincial level or above stand along it. Shipping later moved to the Liangji Canal and the old channel fell quiet.
The quarter assembled from 2021 joins three separate concentrations: the Dongda Mosque and Zhuganxiang area, the Tieta Temple and River Governor's yamen area, and the Ji'antai area. Official accounts put the project area at roughly eleven square kilometres with about 3.2 hectares of water. The stated approach was incremental repair rather than wholesale rebuilding, intended to keep the scale and grain of the traditional lanes.
What to look for
- Dongda Mosque, a national key protected cultural heritage site on the old canal bank
- Taibai Lou and the Tianjing lock, both protected at provincial level; the lock structure lies below the waterline
- Zhuganxiang, the bamboo-goods lane that runs beside the old channel
- The Yutang pickle works southwest of Taibai Lou, with its signboard reading 'Jing sheng chiming, wei ya Jiangnan'
- Bronze figures of canal trackers set along the bank
