About Liangshan Marsh Scenic Area

The county's name comes from Prince Xiao of Liang, a son of Emperor Wen of Han, who held the area in fief and was buried at the foot of the hill; before that it had been a royal hunting ground. The marsh came later: between the Five Dynasties and the Northern Song the Yellow River broke its banks repeatedly and the water pooled around Liangshan, forming the expanse remembered as 'eight hundred li of marsh'. During the Xuanhe era of the Northern Song a band under Song Jiang gathered on the hill, and the Ming writer Shi Nai'an turned that episode into the novel that carried the place's name across China.

The open water is long gone. Working from the novel and from historical records, the county has built a set of themed attractions in recent years, among them Liangshanpo, Juyi Lake and a Water Margin film and television experience park, with the intention of recreating the sense of hill and water together. On the hill the municipal culture and tourism bureau lists a set of named features tied to the novel: Yiguan, the First Pass, the Duanjin Pavilion, Heifengkou and the Zhongyi Hall. Liangshan County covers 964 square kilometres at the point where the Grand Canal to the east and the Yellow River to the west come close together, and has run a Water Margin culture and tourism festival for many years.
