About Mengshan Guimeng Scenic Area

Guimeng is one of three scenic areas grouped by the Shandong provincial government under the name Yimeng Mountain tourism area, alongside Yishan and the Yunmeng area in neighbouring Mengyin County; the grouped area holds national 5A tourist-area, national forest park, national geopark and national water-conservancy scenic-area designations. Guimengding, the peak inside the Guimeng sector, reaches 1,156 metres, which the provincial government gives as the high point of the whole Yimeng range and the county bureau describes as the second highest summit in Shandong. The hills are heavily wooded, with forest cover across the tourism area put at more than 95 per cent. The Yimeng mountains are known locally by the formula 'thirty-six peaks and seventy-two gu', a reference to the flat-topped mesa landforms common in this part of Shandong.

The mountain carries a long literary and religious association. Pingyi County's culture and tourism bureau connects Guimeng with the saying attributed to Confucius about climbing the eastern mountain and finding the state of Lu small, and describes the area as having a long-established Buddhist and Taoist religious tradition, characterised by Taoist longevity culture.

What to look for

• Guimengding, the 1,156-metre summit that gives the scenic area its name and is the highest point of the Yimeng mountains
• Mengshan Shouxian, a colossal figure of the god of longevity carved into the mountainside
• The cliff-side plank walkway cut along the rock face
• Yingwofeng, the rock formation the county bureau treats as Linyi's signature scenic image
• Wanshou Gong, the Taoist temple on the mountain
