About Mengshan Yunmeng Scenic Area
The Shandong provincial government groups Yunmeng with the Guimeng area in Pingyi County and with Yishan further north under the single name Yimeng Mountain tourism area; the grouped area carries national 5A tourist-area, national forest park, national geopark and national water-conservancy scenic-area designations, and Mengyin County lists Yunmeng itself as 5A-rated. Forest cover across the tourism area is put at more than 95 per cent, and the air here has long been promoted for its ion count: a monitoring exercise by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences recorded up to 854,167 negative ions per cubic centimetre.
The forest park within which the scenic area sits was approved by the former Ministry of Forestry in 1994, and the Shandong provincial government declared the area a provincial-level scenic area in June 1995. Its stated extent is 3,676 hectares, with ground generally between 500 and 1,000 metres. Development began in 1993, and the sites opened up since then include a water-curtain cave, the Rain King Temple, Yunmeng Peak, Qifeng Shan, Tianhu Peak and a deer park. Mengshan has carried the nickname 'the second Dai', placing it after Mount Tai among Shandong's mountains, and is traditionally connected with Confucius's remark about climbing the eastern mountain and finding the state of Lu small.
