About Sui and Tang Luoyang City National Heritage Park
Two structures give the park its public identity. The Mingtang, the ritual hall of Wu Zetian's reign, was known as the Wanxiang Shengong, the Hall of Ten Thousand Images; the Tiantang beside it was called the Tongtian Futu, the pagoda reaching to heaven. The archaeological remains beneath them were listed in 2005 among the major sites for national priority protection under the Eleventh Five-Year Plan.
What a visitor meets at the Mingtang is an interpretation project rather than exposed foundations. The municipal heritage bureau describes it as turning history that cannot be seen or touched into a sensory experience by means of sound, light and electronic media, and the displays are built into a structure of more than one level above the site.
What to look for
- The Mingtang, Wu Zetian's ritual hall, whose Tang-period name was the Wanxiang Shengong.
- The Tiantang, known in its own day as the Tongtian Futu, standing beside the Mingtang.
- The central Tongtian pillar display, which uses switchable glass to project an image standing for the pillar that rose more than eighty metres.
- The curved-screen cinema on the first level, which shows the ritual, temple-fair and celebration life that surrounded the Mingtang.
- The 3D panoramic cinema on the second level.
