About Mount Yao
The area covers 268 square kilometres and its high point, Yuhuangding, reaches 2,153.3 metres. It is designated a national scenic and historic area, a national 5A tourist area and a national geopark. Forest covers about 95 per cent of the ground and includes stands of old-growth woodland; Lushan County as a whole reports 54.7 per cent forest cover, rising above 90 per cent in its western mountains, and describes itself as seven parts mountain, one part water and two parts field.
The name comes from Liu Lei, a descendant of the legendary Emperor Yao, who is said to have set up a shrine to Yao here. The county presents itself as the place of origin of the Liu surname and the home district of the Warring States thinker Mozi. Access to the summit ridge is by a cableway 3,000 metres long with a vertical rise of 1,000 metres, opened in 2008, which connects with a 1,500-metre walkway, the Feiyun walkway, running to Yuhuangding.
What to look for
- Shirenfeng, a human-shaped rock standing on the ridge with its base at 1,980 metres and a relative height of about 70 metres above sheer faces.
- Dajiangjun Peak, also called Shenbi Peak, a free-standing granite pinnacle rising straight from the valley floor and counted first among the area's 48 'general' peaks.
- Hehefeng, at 1,700 metres and 190 metres of relative height, cliffed on its north and south sides and split by a fissure on the west into a taller and a shorter peak.
- Qinglongbei, a serrated ridge about 400 metres long running northeast to southwest, dropping away on both sides and narrowing to under a metre at its crest.
- The Jiuqu waterfall, where the stream has worn nine hollows into the rock channel and curves through each in turn.
- Shousong, an old pine rooted over a boulder whose twisted form resembles the traditional character for longevity.
