About Mount Tong
The scenic area was approved as a provincial-level scenic and historic area in 1994 and covers about 132 square kilometres in three sections: Tongshan itself, Tongshan Lake and Yunwu Peak. Alongside that status it carries national AAA scenic-area, national water-conservancy scenic-area and national forest park designations. The mountain section brings together ridges, forest, pools and waterfalls, caves, temples and old ruins together with unusual rock formations, and the county government counts 84 named sights on it, grouped in a traditional formula as one natural bridge, two old temples, three Daoist halls, four heaven gates, five cliffs, six caves, seven monasteries, eight views, nine rocks and ten peaks.
Tongshan Lake, the reservoir at the foot of the mountain, holds up to 133 million cubic metres and spreads over about 16 square kilometres, with several islands in it; it too is a national water-conservancy scenic area. Ringing the lake is the national Tongshan Lake Forest Park, with some 170,000 mu of woodland in which Masson pine, Japanese black pine, Chinese red pine and Korean red pine dominate. A 3,100-mu stand of loblolly pine inside the park is described by the county as the only loblolly pine seed-collection base in the central plains.
