About Huxiaotan Scenic Area
The site lies among the peaks of Qinglong Mountain, Wulong Temple and Tianjing Mountain, where a stream has cut a deep valley of cliffs, stepped falls, caves and springs. It is about 65 kilometres from the city of Shiyan and 33 kilometres from the Yunyang district seat, on the road that links Wudangshan and Shiyan with Xi'an, and the Hubei-Shaanxi highway runs close past it. Average elevation across the area is above 780 metres and daily mean temperatures do not exceed 13 to 16 degrees Celsius.
The district government counts more than thirty named natural and cultural features along the route. They include Hudan Cliff, the Red River Valley, the Tiger Den, the Emerald Ladder, the three-tiered Sandie Waterfall, Hukou Beach, White Tiger Cave and Tianjing Mountain, along with the ruins of Mulong Temple. The interest is concentrated in the succession of drops and pools rather than in any single large fall.
What to look for
- Hudan Cliff, the sheer rock wall the district lists first among the site's features.
- The Sandie Waterfall, a fall that drops in three stages.
- White Tiger Cave, one of the karst cavities along the valley.
