About Sanhu Lianjiang Scenic Area
Jiayu County sits where the Mufu hill country meets the Jianghan plain, on the Yangtze's southern bank between Wuhan to the north, Chibi to the south, the Xianning urban area to the east and Honghu across the water to the west. It covers 1,019.53 square kilometres and has 109.6 kilometres of river bank and 21 interlocking lakes, with 307 square kilometres of water in all – a pattern the county sums up as one part hill, three parts water, four parts field and two parts road and homestead. Sanhu Lianjiang is one of the three natural landscapes the county government singles out, alongside the Paizhouwan bend of the Yangtze and the Zhenhu national wetland park, and it describes the place in the phrase 'the river embraces the county town, the water winds round green hills'.
The area also carries a Southern Song association. In the second month of 1135 Yue Fei was stationed at the Jiayu county town and built a fortified camp on Shushan at the place where Liu Bei had camped during the Red Cliffs campaign, a site later called Yuegong City whose oval remains are recorded as 40 metres by 82 metres with a perimeter of 137 metres. To commemorate him, a pavilion named Yuegong Ting was built in the Sanhu Lianjiang scenic area. The county itself goes back further still: Shayang county was created here in 280 CE and renamed Jiayu in 953 after a line in the Book of Songs.
