About Haokun Lake

The lake runs about six kilometres long, and at high water its surface covers some twenty square kilometres. Islets are scattered across it and crags rise on both shores. The surrounding country is karst: People's Daily Overseas Edition lists peak clusters, depressions, caves, an underground river and tiankeng sinkholes among the forms gathered here. The same account records that the district was once hard to live in, with poor transport, little arable land and restricted livestock keeping.

The State Forestry Administration approved Lingyun county to run a national wetland park construction pilot at Haokun Lake in early 2015, and at the end of that year villages around the lake, among them Haokun and Nongfu, were made priority villages for poverty alleviation. The county drew up a scenic-area plan in 2015, set up a tourism investment company to build and run it in 2016, opened it on trial at the 2017 Spring Festival and had largely finished construction by the end of 2018. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration's notice of 27 December 2019 confirmed that Guangxi Lingyun Haokun Lake National Wetland Park was among 158 pilot parks that had passed acceptance and formally become national wetland parks. The autonomous region's culture and tourism department separately carried the site at grade 4A, under the name Lingyun Haokun Lake landscape and ecology experience area, in its register compiled to the end of 2021.
