About Chong Qing 1949 Yan Yi
The project took three years from planning to completion, and the theatre was designed as a non-standard venue for a fixed tourism production, with a main performance space 89 metres long, 73 metres wide and 31.6 metres high; it is a large-span steel structure with a main beam span of more than 78 metres and a dome weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, described in reporting as the world's largest single indoor dynamic immersive performance theatre. Its stage is made up of five rings that can each rotate 360 degrees, rings 1 to 3 forming the core performance and set area and rings 4 and 5 serving as both stage and seating, and its technical systems were overseen by several specialists including a former chair and the current vice-chair of OISTAT, described in reporting as a UNESCO-affiliated international theatre organisation. The 70-minute show was planned and created by tourism-industry planner Zhang Xiaoke and director Li Hanzhong with a team of national first-class scriptwriters, directors and music producers, plus international stage-design specialists who had worked on the Beijing Olympics, the Turin Winter Olympics and the Shanghai Expo; its sets include a cluster of stilt-house buildings, stone steps and memorial archways, a giant ship under sail, a re-creation of the old Ciqikou wharf, and prison guard posts and iron cells.
Chongqing 1949 Performance Culture Co.'s deputy general manager, Zhou Huifang, said the company assembled a team of more than 200 people and spent five years in preparation to fit the story into the 70-minute format. Since performances began in 2021 the theatre has received more than 2.5 million visitors in total, and by 2025 drew more than 800,000 visitors a year, with 70 per cent of the audience under 35 and more than 30,000 international visitors; international visitor numbers rose from more than 10,000 the previous year to nearly 30,000 in the first ten months of that year. Shapingba District's deputy director of culture and tourism, Qi Xiaofeng, described the theatre as an important visitor-experience and transit hub within the Geleshan Red Crag Cultural Tourism Zone's bid to become a national AAAAA-grade scenic area, a zone that includes Geleshan Martyrs Cemetery and Geleshan Forest Park; the operator also has plans to build a Chongqing 1949 art district of about 180,000 square metres of floor space beside the theatre, with a themed hotel and a food street.
