Pingba Cherry Blossom Garden 平坝樱花园

Pingba Yinghuayuan

The Pingba cherry garden is the block of cherry plantations on the former Pingba state farm, on the boundary between Pingba District in Anshun and the Gui'an New Area in central Guizhou. It was not laid out as an ornamental park: the trees were planted as a nursery crop and the flowering became an attraction afterwards.

About Pingba Cherry Blossom Garden

Guizhou Daily's account, published in 2022, describes the site twenty years earlier as waste ground. In 2002 the Pingba farm leased land to landscaping companies to grow nursery stock under a lease-in-place-of-management arrangement. In 2006 a businessman from Zhejiang, having learned what mature cherry trees fetched, brought in a large consignment of cherry saplings from Japan and planted more than 4,000 mu of white early-flowering cherry and 1,000 mu of red late-flowering cherry. Kong Chengfei, general manager of Guizhou Xiling Ecological Agriculture Development Co., later leased more than 1,000 mu at the same farm and planted Japanese late cherry alongside nursery stock, and other firms leased the land around; the planting spread as far as the Hongfeng Lake area of Qingzhen and reached the ten thousand mu that gives the garden its Chinese name. Kong Chengfei's summary is that the garden began at Pingba and grew at Gui'an, and that the original intention had been landscape planting.

The ownership of the name followed the administrative map. In 2014 the State Council formally approved the establishment of the Gui'an New Area and the cherry garden was placed inside it; Gui'an Avenue opened to traffic in 2015. Kong Chengfei says that in 2013 more than ten thousand mu with nearly 700,000 trees came into flower and drew large numbers of visitors, and that the garden really took off in 2015. He also notes a limitation: as of that 2022 report the plantation held only two kinds of cherry, early and late, which he called rather uniform and short in flowering season.

What to look for

  • The white early-flowering cherry, of which more than 4,000 mu were planted in 2006 from Japanese stock.
  • The red late-flowering cherry planted at the same time, about 1,000 mu of it.
  • The scale of the planting, which spread from the Pingba farm as far as the Hongfeng Lake area of Qingzhen.
  • The former farmland itself, waste ground until it was leased out for nursery stock in 2002.
