About Naigu Stone Forest

The Shilin World Geopark's management bureau dates the rock that formed Nai Gu to 270 million years ago and notes that dolomitic limestone resists dissolution more strongly than pure limestone, so stone forest rarely develops from it anywhere in the world; Nai Gu is treated as an exception, having developed a complete stone-forest landform over more than 10 square kilometres. The bureau describes the site's style as rugged and sweeping, with the rock of Heisongyan running on unbroken as a black sea of stone, and groups it with Cloud Lake, White Cloud Cave, an old battlefield site, Zhantun Dripping Waterfall and other sights into a single scenic area combining views from the peaks, a tour through the forest and a route underground.

The scenic-area tourism operator describes the rock pillars as tall and dense, the tallest more than 40 metres, many shaped like castles, towers or mushrooms, with some standing alone on the cliffs. Individual formations are named for what they resemble: Liang and Zhu's Meeting, likened to the lovers of the Butterfly Lovers legend meeting with their attendants; Ancient Forest Jade Pool, formed by an underground stream with peaks reflected in its water; Prince's Palace, a rock likened to a towering palace deep in the stone forest; a platform called Peak View, built on the highest pillar; Flying Immortal Ravine, a stepped path between sheer walls with the sky reduced to a narrow strip; and Elephant Drawing Water, a formation with a legend of an elephant that stayed behind during a migration.
