About Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon Visitor Area

The catalogue's label is a compound rather than a name: 雅鲁藏布大峡谷开放游览区, the canyon's open touring area, is not a name any cited source uses. What the sources identify is the 雅鲁藏布大峡谷旅游景区, which the Ministry of Culture and Tourism designated a national 5A-level tourist area on 9 November 2020, on the recommendation of the regional culture-and-tourism department and after an assessment and a public notice completed the day before. The regional department's register of Tibet's A-level scenic areas, dated 23 October 2025, enters 雅鲁藏布大峡谷景区 as number 5 with the grade 5A. A 西藏商报 report carried by the same department records that the plaque was unveiled inside the canyon on the afternoon of 5 April 2021, and quotes 顾金荣, given as the canyon's person in charge, saying that the ministry had conferred the 5A plaque the previous November.

The canyon's dimensions come from the ministry. It gives a full length of 504.6 kilometres, a greatest depth of 6,009 metres and a mean depth of 2,268 metres, and places the tourist area in 派镇 in Mainling county, recording that it began operating on 24 July 2008, was rated a national 4A-level tourist area in January 2010, and became Tibet's first national service-standardisation pilot scenic area in 2015. The Mainling city government's tourism page gives a different pair of figures — an average length of 504.64 kilometres and a greatest depth of 6,009 metres, both of which it calls the world's greatest — and puts the canyon's northern end at 大渡卡村 in 派镇, at 2,880 metres, adding that the canyon's main body lies in 墨脱县. The same page says the canyon carries nine vertical natural belts, from high-mountain ice and snow to low river-valley tropical forest, and that the plateau, otherwise cold and dry, is altered by the canyon's presence, the Indian Ocean's warm moist air converging there into what the page calls the world's largest rainfall belt, with annual precipitation of 4,500 to 11,060 millimetres.

Inside the canyon, the provincial report lists a visitor centre and waiting hall, a 亲水台 hot spring developed with Mainling's 藏地药洲 brand, a cliff swing it calls the first on the plateau, a Namcha Barwa camping base, a hot-air balloon that rises level with the peak, and a boat on the Yarlung Zangbo, among others. It also says the scenic area runs themed activities through the year — blossom in spring, boats in summer, autumn colour and winter snow among them. The municipal page describes the Yarlung Zangbo turning back on itself at Namcha Barwa to form a horseshoe bend and then flowing southwest, and records that the peak, which it says 中国国家地理 named China's most beautiful mountain, is also called 羞女峰 because it seldom shows itself and stays hidden behind cloud. That page also names 索松村 as the place people most often go to see the canyon's March peach blossom, with the whole of Namcha Barwa visible from it.

Three limits belong to this record. The catalogue's 开放游览区 label is not a name any cited source uses. No cited source gives the scenic area's boundary, and none gives an elevation for the tourist area itself — the 2,880 metres the municipal page gives belongs to 大渡卡村 at the canyon's northern end. And the two institutional figures for the canyon's length disagree, 504.6 kilometres on the ministry's page against an average of 504.64 on the municipal one; the record carries the ministry's figure and does not adjudicate.
