Dasan Pass 大散关

Dasan Guan

Dasan Pass (大散关), also called San Guan, is a mountain pass on the northern slope of the Qinling south of Baoji in Shaanxi. Both the municipal and the Weibin District government accounts describe it as the throat of the route between Shaanxi and Sichuan, and the district page names it one of the four great gates of Guanzhong.

About Dasan Pass

The district page calls the pass a military strongpoint that successive dynasties had to contest, and counts more than 70 contests for it between the eighth month of the first year of Han Gaozu, which the page itself dates to 206 BCE, and the founding of the People's Republic. Its sequence includes Han Xin's stratagem of repairing the plank road openly while crossing secretly at Chencang, Cao Cao's western campaign against Zhang Lu, Zhuge Liang's sortie from the pass to besiege Chencang, and the Song generals Wu Jie and Wu Lin beating Wanyan Zongbi after taking position there. The same page quotes the Baoji County Gazetteer: without the pass to the north one cannot open up Liang and Yi, without it to the south one cannot secure Guanzhong. It adds that the pass's strategic weight faded after the Baocheng railway and the Bao-Han highway were built.

The two accounts differ on which district the pass lies in. The catalogue record places it in Chencang District, the Weibin District page places it in Shennong township in Weibin District, and the municipal page names no district at all. The district page's list of the pass's features includes a camp gate, a two-storey tower, a Laozi temple, a beacon tower, the Sanguan museum and an uphill path, and it states that the site holds a national AAAA scenic-area grade and a Shaanxi provincial protected-unit listing. Neither page says which of those features a visitor can enter.

What to look for

  • The camp gate and the two-storey tower that the Weibin District page lists among the pass's features.
  • The Laozi temple and the beacon tower, both on the same list.
  • The Sanguan museum, one of the named features.
  • The uphill path, listed among the features on the district page.
  • The pass's Qinling setting on the northern slope south of Baoji, which the municipal page calls the throat of the Shaanxi-Sichuan route.
