About Liuxing Street
The quarter dates from 1935, and the prefecture government describes it as an old block of Yining where courtyards of different colours stand in six fan-shaped sectors and residents of different ethnic groups live side by side. Xinhua traces its design idea to the book Garden Cities of Tomorrow and calls it a multi-ethnic quarter and a meeting place of cultures; it also notes that Liuxing Street is the "hometown" of the song Apple Fragrance. On 1 February 2010 the autonomous-region government office named it a historic-culture district, and in August 2022 it was designated a second-batch national night-time culture and tourism consumption cluster.
Yining has spent 620 million yuan on the quarter's supporting facilities, adding a visitor centre, a Russian-style area and a homestay zone alongside roads and water channels, and describes the programme as protecting the block's built character, environment, businesses and local customs. Xinhua describes the courtyard houses as a defining feature: nearly every house along the street has a walled yard with plants, and the roofs are a mix of domes, points and slopes, with eaves, pillars and window lintels painted or carved. Residents of several ethnic groups continue to live in the quarter.
