About Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter

Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter is a working harbour landscape on the southern side of Hong Kong Island, facing Ap Lei Chau. Fishing boats, small craft and waterfront buildings provide a different view of the city from Victoria Harbour’s central skyline. Its identity is closely connected with Hong Kong’s maritime and fishing communities.

The shelter’s boats are part of an active waterside economy and local life. Viewing them from the promenade reveals the relationship between moorings, landing places and the surrounding urban shoreline. Organised boat trips can offer another perspective, but the existence of sightseeing services does not turn every vessel or landing into a visitor facility.

Start from the public waterfront and watch the movement of smaller boats among the moorings. Compare the sheltered water with the dense buildings beyond it. If you choose a boat experience, use an identified operator and understand the route before boarding. Treat residents and working crews as people going about their lives, and ask before taking close photographs.

What to look for

  • Observe the working boats from the public waterfront.
  • Compare the harbour setting with the Ap Lei Chau shoreline.
