About Tai Po Market and Hong Kong Railway Museum
Hong Kong Railway Museum occupies the former Tai Po Market railway station on Shung Tak Street. Set within the town rather than an isolated transport depot, the open-air museum links the history of railway travel with the surrounding market district. The former station is a different place from today’s operating Tai Po Market MTR station.
The station building dates from 1913 and has a pitched roof in a traditional Chinese architectural style. It became a declared monument in 1984 and opened as a museum after restoration in 1985. The exhibition includes the old ticket office and signal cabin, while locomotives, historical coaches, trolleys and signalling equipment occupy the outdoor area.
Begin with the station building to understand tickets, signals and passenger routines, then compare the vehicles outside. A railway vehicle is easier to read when you think about how passengers boarded and staff worked around it. Continue into the surrounding streets for a sense of the town that the station served.
What to look for
- Compare the station’s architecture with its railway functions.
- Look at rolling stock, coaches and signalling equipment.
