About St Lazarus Quarter and Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro
The streets around St Lazarus Church form a small cultural quarter on the Macao Peninsula. Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro, commonly associated with the Chinese name Feng Tang Xie Xiang, belongs to a network of lanes, courtyards and older buildings. It is a neighbourhood walk rather than a single museum entrance.
The church has a long association with Macao’s Chinese Catholic community, while the surrounding district contains buildings reused for arts and creative activity. The Albergue setting and nearby cultural spaces add different layers to the streetscape. The quarter’s historic name also recalls an earlier charitable and medical history associated with the area.
