About Tap Seac Cultural Quarter

Tap Seac is a cultural area centred on a major public square and the nearby Tap Seac Gallery. Older buildings, exhibition spaces and open civic space give this part of Macao a different rhythm from the dense visitor lanes around the main heritage monuments. The quarter is best understood as several connected stops.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau opened Tap Seac Gallery in 2003 to present art and cultural exhibitions. Its adaptable interior supports changing programmes, so a visit depends partly on what is being shown. The gallery also provides a useful contrast between a preserved architectural setting and contemporary artistic work.

Begin outside by looking across the square and comparing the surrounding facades. Then choose an open cultural venue and spend time with its current exhibition, rather than treating every building as a permanent museum. Returning to the square afterwards helps place the interior visit in the wider neighbourhood. Festivals and markets may temporarily change how the open space is used.

What to look for

  • Compare the public square with the scale of adjoining buildings.
