About Senado Square and the IAM Building
Senado Square is a central public space in historic Macao, facing the former Leal Senado building, now the headquarters of the Municipal Affairs Bureau. Its patterned stone paving, fountain and surrounding facades create one of the city’s most recognisable streetscapes. It is also a working meeting place and event space.
The square takes its name from the former municipal chamber across the road. The building’s white exterior, dark window frames and tile decoration provide a more restrained counterpart to the square’s open visual pattern. Together, the civic building and public space connect government history with the everyday movement of the city.
Begin by observing the paving from different positions, then compare the rhythm of windows and arcades around the square. If the municipal building’s public areas are open, look at the tiled surfaces and the transition from street to interior. Its library and ceremonial rooms are separate spaces with their own access arrangements, so exterior access should not be treated as an unrestricted building tour.
