The National Museum of Natural Science in Taichung's North District combines scientific collections, explanatory displays and hands-on learning. Its scope extends well beyond a single dinosaur or geology gallery, making it a place to follow a question about life, people or the physical world through several kinds of evidence.

The life-science displays include interpretation of the human life cycle, while the Global Environment Hall connects minerals, living systems and Taiwan's natural environments. The museum uses objects alongside models and interactive media, including a spherical Earth display. Looking at how a specimen is explained can be as useful as identifying the specimen itself: scale, time and the relationship between a part and a whole are recurring themes.

A botanical garden forms another component of the museum setting and can add a living-plant perspective to an indoor visit.
