About Checheng Railway and Timber Heritage Area

Checheng is a railway and former timber-processing settlement in Shuili Township, Nantou County. Its position at the end of the Jiji branch line helped connect the area with the movement of construction materials, timber and other goods. Railway structures and the later timber industry are therefore two connected parts of the same local story.

The timber exhibition hall makes the industrial history particularly tangible. A sawmill established during the postwar expansion of logging brought employment and commercial activity, before changing forestry policy and the decline of the industry left the site in need of a new use. The exhibition hall, opened in 2008, incorporates repaired older roof structures beneath newer timber framing, allowing visitors to distinguish conservation work from the original factory fabric.

Elsewhere, railway warehouses, staff residences, preserved rolling stock and the log-storage pond add different perspectives. Some railway objects were brought from other locations for preservation, so their presence should not automatically be read as evidence that they originally worked at Checheng. Start with the relationship between station, industrial buildings and water, then use the interpretation to trace how the settlement has been reused.

Use 車埕 in Shuili Township, not similarly named places elsewhere. Confirm the current branch-line or road connection; the timber hall, railway displays and local shops have separate operating arrangements.
